Meditation Fundamentals

Meditation Fundamentals is our foundational meditation course. It’s a practical introduction to awareness-based living and contemporary meditation designed for real life. We explain what meditation actually is, not just how to sit or breathe, but what is happening in the mind, the nervous system, and your awareness when you meditate and how to work with it.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Most importantly, if you learn via SOMM, you're stepping into an ecosystem of support, follow-up master classes and a real-life community (digital + in-person). Rather than presenting meditation as a technique to “fix” yourself, this course frames it as a relationship with attention, and with life. You will finish the course with a clear understanding of what meditation is and how to weave it into your life consistently.

We explore meditation from all facets:

  • Ancient contemplative roots

  • Modern neuroscience

  • Psychological frameworks

  • Real-life integration

This course is taught in two parts:

Part One: The Awareness Superpower At SOMM, we know that cultivating an awareness-based practice supports a more conscious and aware life. This means less living in default-mode and habit, and instead more presence and active participation in a life you choose. Understanding what awareness is in both meditative and neuroscientific senses is one of the most helpful things you can do to start becoming more conscious.

In Part One of this course, we will cover:

  • Understanding the architecture of awareness and its three layers

  • How we can use awareness in day-to-day life to:

  • Relate to thoughts and emotions

  • Recognise patterns & conditioning

  • Nervous system literacy

Part Two: Meditation, Neuroscience & Creating a Practice

This part of the course offers a grounded introduction to meditation through the lens of science, psychology and lived experience. We have trained hundreds of meditators and teachers and have a clear understanding of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to creating a (magic ingredient alert) consistent practice.

Students will learn about:

The main styles of meditation and how to use them. We believe that not one technique is suitable or appropriate for everyone

  • “One love, Many Paths.”

  • Meditation and the brain and nervous system

  • How to build a sustainable personal practice

  • Common obstacles and how to work with them In both sessions, there will be a second guided meditation that will also be recorded for you to practice as homework.

Modern Meditation is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike who want a stronger foundation.

This course is a prerequisite for SOMM’s Advanced Meditation & Teacher Certification Program.
